Rob Marshall wanted the title sequence for his 2002 film of ”Chicago” to hint at both Roxie Hart’s fascination with the neon glare of show business and the tawdriness that the bright lights conceal. Mr. Marshall provided Big Film with a shot in which the camera moved closer and closer to Reneé Zellweger’s eye. ”We had to smooth it out and create a move in the computer that actually went through her pupil, which obviously a real camera can’t do,” Mr. Balsmayer says. ”We wanted to get the viewer as quickly as possible to the distinctive ‘five-six-seven-eight’ countdown that began the stage show.” First they replaced the image of her iris and its reflected highlights with a clean version. Then, Mr. Balsmayer explains, ”we could animate the reflection to travel and transform into a ‘C.’ ” The computer animation appeared to push through the eyeball to reveal the word ”Chicago” in flickering, sputtering light bulbs. – New York Times: Giving Credits the Credit They’re Due
